Psychosocial risk management is an essential part of a supervisor’s WHS responsibilities, ensuring not only physical safety but also the psychological wellbeing of workers on site. In construction, psychosocial hazards commonly arise from high job demands, long hours, tight deadlines, role ambiguity, conflict, and exposure to traumatic events. Effective management involves identifying these hazards early, assessing their impact, and implementing practical controls such as clear communication, realistic workloads, supportive leadership, fatigue management, and early intervention in instances of bullying or unreasonable behaviour. These actions help create a stable, respectful workplace where workers feel safe to speak up and seek support.
For managers and supervisors, strong leadership is the foundation of psychosocial safety. Consistent behaviour, fair decision‑making, and genuine support directly influence team culture, performance, and safety outcomes. By maintaining open communication, modelling respectful behaviour, and regularly checking in with workers, leaders can reduce stress, prevent conflict, and improve overall morale. When psychosocial risks are well managed, workers are more focused, engaged, and able to perform tasks safely, ultimately leading to better project outcomes and a healthier, more productive workforce.
At the conclusion of this course, there will be a 10 question, multiple choice assessment. Upon successful completion of this, a certificate of attendance will be issued.
