Update regarding SILICA training – 21 July 2023
On 15 June 2023, the ACT Government extended the deadline for workers in the construction industry to complete the national training unit 10830NAT Course in Crystalline Exposure Prevention (originally 1 July 2023, now 1 October 2023).
This extension is a direct result of the continuous calls made by Master Builders ACT to extend the deadline, to ensure that the industry has sufficient time to comply.
If you have not enrolled and would like too, please scroll down to Sessions. You will need to complete an enrolment form and send it through to training@mba.org.au to be booked in. We are now delivering this nationally accredited course in Crystalline Silica exposure prevention to promote health and safety within the workplace. The aim of the course is to help build awareness of the risks and assist in avoiding dangerous exposure to this substance.
Through the duration of this course, participants will learn to recognise the workplace health and safety risks and hazards associated when working with crystalline silica containing products. It will cover how to determine and plan for the implementation of safe systems of work that aim to reduce the exposure within mandatory exposure limits.
The workplace health and safety law has provision that employers or persons conducting a business, or undertaking (PCBU) at a workplace, must ensure that no person at the workplace is exposed to a substance or mixture in an airborne concentration that exceeds the exposure standard for the substance or mixture. This course may assist in meeting your lawful obligations under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011.
As advised by ACT Government, penalties may apply for PCBU's who do not comply with the new mandatory training scheme for workers involved in silica dust work. Occupations that require the training will be broadly aligned with the existing mandatory training requirements for asbestos awareness training. If you are a PCBU - you would need to ensure all workers have undertaken mandatory silica awareness training by 1 October 2023 (applies to ACT).
