On Tuesday 28 April Master Builders participated in the International Workers Memorial Day Ceremony. The ceremony provides an opportunity to reflect on workplace fatalities and commemorate lives lost.
The theme this year is stamping out psychosocial hazards in the workplace, this was addressed by WorkSafe ACT Commissioner who reminded those present that psychosocial hazards are the silent, unseen killers in our workforce. Policies alone are not enough. We need to create a safe workplace culture that stamps out silence and encourages us all to speak up, hold supportive space for ourselves and colleagues and tackle psychosocial hazards headon.
Workplace injuries and fatalities are a grave reminder of the importance of workplace safety. On average 200 workers a year die from a workplace incident in Australia. The WorkSafe ACT Commissioner in her address reminded us that internationally over 3 million people die at work, that is 6,000 lives per day, and the ripple effect extends far beyond the workplace.
