Recently the world has become focused on the Coronavirus. Our industry will not be immune to impacts from this virus. Master Builders, through our national office, has held extensive discussions with Karen Andrews, Minister for Industry, and the Prime Minister’s office. We will be able to provide more information to members in the coming days and weeks.

In the meantime, we would like to hear from members who may be experiencing delays or impacts on supply chains as a result from the Coronavirus, so that we can feed this information back to Government.

In the ACT, the MBA has been active this week on the following advocacy topics:

  • Meeting with Skills Canberra and the Chief Minister’s office to address the recent VET funding cuts which will have significant impact trade training in the ACT

  • Responding to Draft Variations to the Territory Plan (DV365, DV368 and DV369)

  • Working with our residential sector to improve work safety practices

This week the ABS released several important statistics about the construction industry. Some key figures include:

  • Total building work in the ACT has decreased 23.6% over 12 months to $2.57 Billion (year to Jan 2020)

  • Only renovation work increased (47.2% increase over 12 months to $6.1m in January 2020), with apartment, units, detached house and commercial building work declining.

  • The Construction industry now employs 18,938 people (as at Nov 2019) which represents 8.0% of total employment.
