What you need to know before you start your career in construction

Posted

The big question for many school leavers is: if university is not the right path, then what comes next?

For thousands of young people across the ACT, the answer may lie in construction. It’s a hands-on career with fundamental skills, strong job demand and clear pathways to grow, earn and specialise.

But before you can step onto a construction site, you must complete three courses.

These courses are not optional. They are the foundation of working safely in the building and construction industry.

Preparing for work in construction: White Card

Construction sites are active environments with tools, machinery, and materials, and many trades working side by side. Safety is serious, and everyone on site needs to understand the basics before work begins.

That is why the first course every worker needs to complete is CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry.

The course teaches you how construction sites operate, and how to recognise common hazards and follow safety procedures. It is required before you can enter construction sites in the ACT and across Australia.

Understanding hidden risks on site: asbestos and silica

Many buildings in Canberra were constructed decades ago, and some materials used in the past can still pose risks today. Two of the most serious are asbestos and crystalline silica.

11084NAT – Course in Asbestos Awareness is mandatory for anyone who may encounter asbestos on site.

The course teaches you how to identify materials that contain asbestos, understand the health risks, and know what to do if you come across it.

Similarly, 10830NAT – Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention is now required for any workers entering a construction site. Materials such as concrete, brick, tiles and stone can release fine silica dust when cut or ground. Over time, breathing in this dust can cause serious illness.

This course teaches you how to identify silica risks and follow safe work practices to reduce exposure.

Completing both courses means you are aware of hazards that are always obvious but can have long-term consequences if ignored.

A practical starting point for a real career

Together, White Card, Asbestos Awareness and Silica Exposure Prevention courses form the minimum entry point into construction work in the ACT. They show employers that you understand site safety and are ready to work responsibly.

For school leavers who prefer practical learning, construction offers a clear alternative to university. You can earn while you learn, build real skills and move into areas such as carpentry, civil construction, site support, supervision or specialised trades over time.

MBA Training delivers these courses locally in Canberra, with experienced trainers who understand how ACT construction sites operate. The training is straightforward, practical and designed to prepare you for real work environments.

If you’re finishing school and thinking about a future in construction, start with the basics. Completing these three mandatory courses puts you in a strong position to begin work safely and confidently.
