Welcome to National Safe Work Month 2026: Week 1 – For Life: Why WHS Matters

Posted

October marks National Safe Work Month, a time when workplaces across Australia pause, reflect, and recommit to creating environments where every worker can thrive safely. Safe Work Australia reminds us that the purpose of work health and safety is simple and profound: to protect workers’ lives, health and future.

For MBA ACT members—leaders, builders, contractors, and professionals shaping the ACT’s construction landscape—this month is an opportunity to champion safety not just as a compliance requirement, but as a core value that strengthens teams, projects, and communities.

In construction, WHS is not abstract—it’s lived daily on sites, in workshops, and in offices. It’s the difference between a near miss and a serious incident, between uncertainty and confidence, between risk and resilience. This week encourages us to reflect on:

  • The real human impact of safety—how WHS safeguards workers’ families, livelihoods, and futures.
  • The responsibility we share—from apprentices to senior managers—to uphold safe practices.
  • The culture we create—where speaking up is encouraged, and safety is embedded in every task.

As we begin National Safe Work Month, Week 1 invites us to reconnect with the “why” behind safety. In our industry, every safe choice protects a life, a family, a future. Let’s use this week to:

  • Reinforce safety leadership on every site
  • Encourage open conversations about risks and improvements
  • Share resources with teams and subcontractors
  • Celebrate the people who champion safety every day

Your commitment to WHS strengthens the ACT construction community and sets the standard for excellence across all industries.

Safe Work Australia has released a comprehensive suite of resources to help organisations participate meaningfully throughout the month. These tools are designed to spark conversations, support toolbox talks, and provide practical ways to engage your teams.
