The small forklift habits that cause big problems

Posted

Most forklift incidents don’t come from someone doing something obviously unsafe. They come from habits that form over time—a load carried slightly higher than it should be, a turn taken without full visibility, moving through a shared space without checking because the area is usually clear.

None of it feels risky in the moment. It feels efficient, and that’s where the problem starts.

When routine replaces attention

Forklifts are a regular part of construction sites, used to move materials and keep areas clear. Over time, familiarity can take over. Tasks become automatic, and the focus shifts from how the work is done to simply getting it done. This is where small changes in behaviour begin to appear:

  • a load is lifted and move without fully considering balance
  • a path is taken without checking who else is working nearby
  • equipment is used without a proper check because it was fine the day before.

On their own, these actions seem minor. Together, they increase the risk on-site.

Forklift training: tightening how the work is done

The difference between a controlled site and a risky one comes down to how routine tasks are handled. Working safely with a forklift isn’t just operating the machine. You must plan movements, understand load limits, maintain clear visibility and work within the conditions of the site.

TLILIC0003 – Licence to Operate a Forklift Truck focuses on these practical aspects. It covers how to assess a task before starting, how to operate safely in shared work areas and how to manage loads without introducing unnecessary risk.

For many workers, the value of the training is not learning something completely new, but refining how they already work and correcting the small habits that slip in over time. That shift is what reduces incidents.

Why it matters on a busy site

Forklifts often operate in areas where multiple trades are working at the same time. Space is shared, movement is constant and conditions can change quickly. When habits replace attention, it only takes a small mistake for something to go wrong.

When the same tasks are approached with a consistent method, movement is more controlled, communication is clearer and risks are identified earlier.

In most cases, the difference is not dramatic. It is a series of small decisions made correctly, every time.

That is what keeps routine work from becoming a serious incident.
