The ACT Government has adopted the nationally agreed reduction in the workplace exposure standard (WES) for aluminium welding fumes.
The standard has been reduced from 5 mg/m³ to 1 mg/m³ measured as an 8-hour time weighted average. This reduction will formally commence on 9 September 2026.
This brings the WES for aluminium welding fumes in line with the WES for other welding materials.
Aluminium welding is commonly used in the construction and repair of boats and vehicle trays, as well as for industrial access systems such as walkways, stairs and ladders.
Welding aluminium generates fumes and other hazardous substances that can be harmful to worker’s health. Reducing the WES will help to better protect workers from these hazards.
