Professional Engineer Registration Commences 6 March 2024

Posted

The Professional Engineers Act 2023 was passed in the ACT legislative assembly on 23 March 2023 and has introduced a Professional Engineers Registration Scheme for the ACT.

Who needs to register

An individual who provides or carries out professional engineering services in the ACT, in one of the following areas of engineering:

  • Civil engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Fire Safety engineering
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Structural engineering

There are some exceptions to the requirement to register such as an individual who carries out professional engineering services under the direction and oversight of another professional engineer who takes responsibility for the service.

Eligibility for registration

An individual will be eligible to be registered in area of engineering if the applicant meets the required qualifications, experience and competencies. This includes a report from an approved assessment authority for each area of engineering for which an individual wants to be registered.

When do you need to register

The Professional Engineering Registration Scheme will commence on 6 March 2024, however it is not mandatory to be registered by 6 March 2024. The date for mandatory registration is being finalised by the ACT Government and will be announced at a later date.

Members who provide or carry out professional engineering services in the designated areas of engineering in the ACT are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Scheme and apply for registration as soon as possible.
