New ACT Asbestos Advice Notice for use from 1 July 2023

Posted

The ACT Government is replacing the ACT Asbestos Advice Notice with effect from 1 July 2023.

The updated Notice updates advice on where asbestos material may be in a home and now applies to homes built in or before 1990. The current Notice provided advice for homes built in or before 1985. These changes are based on national advice.

Please start using the new advice notice from 1 July 2023, when the legislative instrument takes effect. You can download it from the ACT Legislation Register.

The updated Notice must be given to new owners or lessees as part of tenancy agreements and contracts for sale for residential premises. It also needs to be provided during relevant development application processes.

The updated Notice will improve the overall safety approach to maintenance and renovation work and will help mitigate the ongoing risks posed by asbestos in residential premises.
If you have any questions, please call the Coordination team on (02) 6205 4700 or LooseFillAsbestos@act.gov.au.

Asbestos Safety

Asbestos is an ongoing hazard to our population and the ACT Government is continually looking for ways to advise the community about its danger and to remove it physically or otherwise prevent it escaping into the environment. While bonded asbestos is not as likely to cause illness as loose fill asbestos does, there is still a significant risk involved.
