There has been significant movement from Government and unions to ensure a safe workplace for employees, especially as it relates to silica and silica containing material. The deadline of 1 October 2023 for employees to undertake silica training has passed, and members are reminded that employees who have not received this training are not allowed on site where they may be exposed to silica.

Members are encouraged to ensure that any high-risk work, which includes the cutting of silica containing material, are identified in their SWMS and ensure the correct control measures and RPE are used.

We have received an increase in reports from members that WorkSafe ACT is actively inspecting construction sites to ensure PCBUs are complying with the new silica dust regulations. Prohibition and infringement notices have been issued to PCBUs who are non-compliant.

If you have any questions relating to your obligation in relation to silica dust safety, please contact our Workplace Relations and Legal Team on (02) 6175 5900.
