Meet the Team: Melissa Fourie

Posted

Melissa is a Workplace Relations and Legal Adviser with MBA Legal.

1. What work did you do before here?

Before moving to Australia, I worked at a boutique firm in Pretoria South Africa that specialised in Labour Law and Administrative Law. I acted as the head of department for the Administrative Law leg of the firm and dealt with the Litigation. I acted on behalf of individuals, Body Corporates and Property Groups, and even local government in a myriad of matters mostly involving property law and local government governance together with the resulting litigation.

2. What topics can you assist members with?

Members are welcome to contact me on any of the following topics:

  • Industrial relations from Award wages to employment contracts
  • General advice on contracts
  • Employee matters (redundancy, general concerns, conduct etc.)

3. What assistance can you offer under the MBA Legal banner?

MBA Legal is a fully licensed and working legal firm with the express purpose of assisting members with their legal matters. This includes but is not limited to debt collection, building disputes, disputes with government and contract support. I would encourage members to approach MBA Legal with any support they may need and we will be more than willing to help or point them in the right direction.

4. What made you want to work for Master Builders ACT?

The Master Builders ACT is an employer’s organization that provides member support on all internal relations topics and is actively involved in the legislative process that would effect its members or the property market. Since I have a background in labour law and enforcing compliance of governance I thought it would be an ideal fit with a good balance of each topic. The Master Builders ACT really advocates for its members and I am honoured to be part of an organization that has a hand in sculpting legislation. I was not aware of the great internal culture upon applying but I cannot be more pleased to be a part of it.

5. Do you speak any other languages, if so what are they?

I am fluent in Afrikaans and English and can understand some Dutch.

6. What are your hobbies?

I enjoy hiking and being outdoors, especially around Canberra that has a lot of great outdoor spots. I am also passionate about cooking and must admit I never miss Masterchef Australia.

7. What sports teams do you support?

Since I am South African I am an avid supporter of rugby and cricket and will be team Springbok or Protea all the way.

8. Do you do any work in the community/volunteer?

Since arriving in Canberra I have had the opportunity to partake in community events such as sausage sizzler days with all proceeds going to local schools for children with special needs.
