Media Release – Master Builders ACT Election Scorecard

Master Builders ACT has released its ACT Election Policy Scorecard today.

Master Builders ACT CEO, Michael Hopkins said, “The policy scorecard released today outlines how well ACT Labor and the Canberra Liberal’s policies address the issues that matter most to our members.”

“The scorecard will be distributed to our 1,200 members who are the businesses that contribute to the ACT’s economy through the homes, infrastructure, vital services and commercial projects that they build,” he said.

Mr Hopkins said, “Throughout the 2020 ACT election campaign, Master Builders ACT has been advocating on behalf of our members on issues that are important to their livelihoods and the strength of the economy.”

“We have been pleased to see both major parties recognise the important role the local building and construction industry plays in Canberra’s economic recovery,” he said.

Mr Hopkins said, “The local building and construction industry contributes to 8% of the ACT’s GDP each year and supports close to 20,000 jobs.” 

“In the final week of the campaign, we would like both sides to do more to support local apprenticeships, including the introduction of a pre-apprenticeship program. We would also like both major parties to commit to mandating apprentices to work on major ACT Government funded infrastructure projects,” he said.

Mr Hopkins said, “More than ever, it is imperative that the ACT has a business friendly government who will focus on job creating policy areas; supporting local businesses, building skilled and secure careers in the construction industry, introducing best practice building quality reforms, and implementing a best practice planning system supported by a long term infrastructure plan.”
