Media Release – ACT Job Losses Higher Than Average For Construction Sector

Posted

Latest ABS jobs and wages data has revealed that since 14 March, construction jobs in the ACT have contracted 4.8%, higher than the average job losses across all industries in the Territory.

Master Builders ACT CEO, Michael Hopkins said, “Around 1,000 Canberrans have lost their jobs in the construction sector since Australia recorded it’s 100th case of Coronavirus on 14 March.”

“As the Territory’s second largest private sector employer, the construction industry is relying on the ACT Government to provide further stimulus measures and announce a future pipeline of works to prevent further job losses,” he said.

Mr Hopkins said, “A long term capital works plan which boosts local construction jobs and provides infrastructure to support our long term growth is urgently needed.”

“We are fast approaching the ACT election in October and more than ever, the industry needs a business-friendly government which supports an economic recovery led by the construction industry,” he said.
