MBA Advocating for more Skilled Workers

Posted

We know that one of the major constraints to running and growing a construction business is attracting and retaining skilled workers. The MBA is working with the ACT Government on a range of initiatives to help address this issue. Some of the ways we are working on this issue include:

  • Supporting the ACT Minister’s efforts to advocate for more international skilled migration for the ACT.
  • Identifing flexible solutions that allow new entrants into the building and construction industry, including pre-vocational programs and women in construction programs.
  • Contributing to research being conducted by the University of Canberra for the ACT Government on the ACT’s skills needs.
  • Improving the biggest barriers to attracting people to Canberra, with one of the most significant barriers being the cost of land and housing.
  • Developing promotion campaigns to attract people from beyond the Canberra region such as have been run in other States for some time.

The ACT Government has produced a digital tool kit to help employers attract workers to the ACT. The tool kit can be found here.

The MBA will also be running our own programs to attract people, especially tradespeople, to the building industry through our own construction careers evenings. We are holding an initial session for interested carpentry apprentices and employers on 21 July (link here) and will be running further sessions later this year for other trades.
