Confined spaces are some of the most dangerous areas on a construction site. These spaces can have limited entry points, poor ventilation and unseen hazards that put workers at risk.
Because of this, anyone who may need to access a confined space in the ACT must complete recognised confined space training before the work begins.
What are some examples of confined spaces?
Confined spaces can include tanks, pits, shafts, pipes, ducts, crawl spaces, or any area not designed for people to remain in for long periods. These spaces can contain dangerous atmospheres, low oxygen levels or contaminants that can’t be seen or smelled. This is why confined space training is so important for anyone working in these areas.
Confined space training
RIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces with MBA Training is a nationally recognised course that provides the knowledge and practical skills required to meet safety and compliance requirements for people who need to work in confined spaces.
During the course, you’ll learn how to identify confined spaces and understand the risks of entering them. You’ll also learn how to check entry conditions, complete documentation such as entry permits and follow correct isolation procedures. The course will also cover how to use personal protective equipment and the correct tools needed for safe work in confined spaces.
A major part of the training focuses on atmosphere testing. Before entering a confined space, the atmosphere must be tested for oxygen levels, gases and other hazards. In RIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces, you learn how to use gas detection equipment correctly and how to respond if the readings show unsafe conditions.
Practical training plays a significant role in this course. You will take part in activities that simulate confined space entry, safe movement within the space and procedures for exiting safely.
These exercises help you build confidence and prepare for real situations you may face on-site.
Another critical part of the course is communication. Confined space work requires a clear system between the person inside the space and the standby or support person.
You will learn how to maintain contact, follow emergency procedures and ensure safe entry and exit at all times.
When you successfully complete the course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for RIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces.
Completing this training shows that you understand how to recognise hazards, follow safe work procedures and carry out tasks in confined spaces.
