CED Technical Services Unit have worked in collaboration with RD Gossips to undertake a review and update of the design standards and ACT standard drawings for vertical deflection devices and standard crossing layouts. The update for vertical deflection devices applies to concrete raised pavement platforms, asphalt roads humps (full width of road carriageway), asphalt road cushions (discrete 1.9m wide cushions) and asphalt car park humps. The update for standard crossing layouts applies to Children’s Crossings, Zebra Crossings and Wombat Crossings.
The focus of the update for vertical deflection devices is primarily to optimise the design of concrete and asphalt vertical deflection devices, including optimisation of speed reduction effects for motor vehicles, improvements to safety for pedestrians and cyclists, extension of service life of pavements, improvements to constructability and ease of construction, etc. The focus of the update for standard crossing layouts is to achieve alignment with the recently revised AS 1742.10 version 2024.
Below is a high-level summary of the major changes to MIS 13 and ACTSD-353X series:
Attached to this email is a Change Register which contains a description of each proposed change, further clarification against each proposed change, and also includes reasoning / rationale for each proposed change.
Consultation
The updates to standard drawings were developed in close consultation with CED stakeholders, including Transport Canberra Bus Operations and Roads ACT. In addition, the new standard details have been adopted with success on recent road safety upgrade and traffic calming upgrade packages constructed over the past year.
Finally, a full round of consultation was undertaken with various ACT Govt stakeholders and with ACT asphalt contractors. All feedback received as part of this consultation has been addressed.
Industry Webinar Video
An Industry Webinar Video has also been recorded and uploaded to the City Services webpage (link) under the tab ‘Industry webinar videos’. This video describes in detail all of the updates to MIS 13 and ACTSD’s for vertical deflection devices and standard crossing layouts.
Adoption of revised MIS/MITS/ACTSD on legacy or ongoing projects
For projects which are in design phase, it is expected that the revised MIS 13 and revised standard drawings be adopted. For projects currently under a D&C contract, please discuss with the client, project manager, deed manager, Development Coordination Branch or equivalent.
Superseded ACTSD files can no longer be accessed on the City Services website. For ongoing projects which require access to superseded ACTSD files, please contact TCCS.RoadStandards@act.gov.au.
