Most builders have Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) that address the traditional construction risks we see every day, such as working at heights, mobile plant, electrical work and manual handling.
However, over the past 12 to 24 months, WorkSafe ACT and SafeWork NSW have increased their focus on several emerging workplace health and safety risks that may not be adequately addressed in existing SWMS and WHS systems. These include psychosocial hazards, biological hazards, workplace exposure limits and extreme weather conditions.
What should builders be looking at?
Psychosocial hazards such as fatigue, workplace stress, bullying, harassment, excessive workloads and inadequate supervision are now recognised WHS risks that must be identified and managed like any other workplace hazard
Biological hazards can arise during demolition, renovation, excavation and drainage works where workers may be exposed to mould, contaminated materials, sewerage, animal waste or other biological contaminants.
Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) continue to be a key area of focus, particularly where workers are exposed to silica dust, welding fumes, wood dust and other airborne contaminants. Reviewing controls and monitoring processes remains critical.
Extreme temperatures are also attracting greater attention from regulators, with employers expected to have appropriate controls in place to manage the risks associated with heat, cold, dehydration and worker fatigue.
A timely opportunity to review your systems
As WHS expectations continue to evolve, now is a good time for builders to review their SWMS and broader safety management systems to ensure they remain current, practical and aligned with legislative requirements.
MBA ACT’s Workplace Relations and Safety Team can assist residential members by conducting a WHS Health Check of their existing SWMS and safety documentation.
This review can help identify potential gaps, provide practical recommendations and ensure your business is better positioned to meet current WorkSafe ACT and SafeWork NSW expectations.
To arrange a WHS Health Check or discuss your current SWMS documentation, please contact the MBA ACT Workplace Relations Team.
