Reminder: Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) are non negotiable

Members are reminded that a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is legally required whenever high-risk construction work is being undertaken.

What is a SWMS?

A SWMS is a document that identifies the high-risk activities being performed, the hazards and risks associated with that work, and the control measures that will be implemented to keep workers and others safe. It must be prepared before work commences and reviewed whenever circumstances change.

High risk activities include:

• Work involving a risk of a person falling more than 2 metres (working at heights)
• Work that involves, or is likely to involve, disturbing asbestos
• Demolition of a load-bearing element of a structure.
• Work in an area where there is movement of powered mobile plant
• Work that involves the cutting of crystalline silica material using a power tool or another mechanical process.

This list is not exhaustive.

Who should have a SWMS?

Both principal contractors and any other trade or contractors engaged on a projects undertaking high risk activities must prepare and comply with a SWMS. A principal should continually monitor its contractors for compliance with SWMS to avoid penalties.
