Concrete curing in Canberra winter

Posted

With Canberra’s cold winter conditions, builders and concreters should take extra care when placing and curing concrete. Concrete must be protected from rapid temperature loss, frost, and freezing, particularly during the early curing period when strength development is most vulnerable.

Where possible, avoid pouring concrete late in the day during cold weather. If the surface temperature drops too quickly overnight, the top layer can freeze before adequate strength has developed, which may result in dusting, scaling, surface weakness, cracking, or long-term durability issues.

Good winter curing practices include:

  • Planning pours earlier in the day to allow initial set before overnight temperature drops.
  • Checking forecast temperatures, wind chill, and frost risk before placement.
  • Using appropriate curing methods such as curing compounds, plastic sheeting, or temporary covers.
  • Use accelerators and other additives with care, ensuring they are suitable for the conditions and do not compromise curing, workability, or final concrete strength.
  • Protecting slab edges and exposed surfaces from frost and cold winds.
  • Avoiding placement onto frozen ground, formwork, reinforcement, or substrates.
  • Allowing additional curing time before finishing or commencing follow-on trades.

Concrete curing should always be planned to suit the site conditions, concrete mix, and expected temperatures. Taking simple precautions during winter can help avoid preventable defects and improve the long-term performance of the finished work.
