WorkSafe ACT Road Transport Industry Breakfast

Posted

On 27 August, WorkSafe ACT put the spotlight on the road transport sector as part of its industry breakfast series, focusing on ongoing safety challenges and priorities for improvement.

So far in 2025, the industry has recorded 60 fatal crashes, 172 fatigue-related offences and 46 critical incident breaches. In 2024, 19% of inspections failed to meet required safety standards. While 80% of drivers reported understanding their safety responsibilities, only 65% were aware of industry codes of practice, pointing to the need for greater education and awareness.

Beyond physical hazards, the industry continues to face serious psychological risks, with fatigue, stress, isolation and other mental health challenges identified as the biggest threats.

WorkSafe ACT stressed that despite legislative frameworks, consultation, worker engagement, education and open reporting mechanisms remain vital to improving safety.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) outlined two key priorities:

  1. Strengthening fatigue management and mechanical inspection compliance.
  2. Promoting the Heavy Vehicle Confidential Reporting Line to encourage safe and open reporting.

The road transport industry plays a key role in the building and construction industry. If you would like advice or support in managing safety obligations in your business, please reach out to us on 61755900 or workplace@mba.org.au.
