WHS profile on heavy vehicle related incidents in australia

Posted

Safe Work Australia data shows there are approximately 161,500 truck drivers in Australia, with more than half aged over 45. Truck driving is one of the most hazardous occupations in the country, with the highest number of work-related fatalities over the past decade.

Key risk factors include:

  • Vehicle incidents, including single-vehicle crashes
  • Physical and mental strain, including musculoskeletal injuries
  • Routine tasks such as loading and unloading freight
  • Long hours and fatigue

With the road freight sector projected to grow significantly, these risks are likely to increase, making robust WHS management and preventive practices essential.

To reduce risk, consider:

  • Strict fatigue management policies (reasonable hours, rest breaks, rotation)
  • Safe procedures for loading/unloading and working at heights
  • Ergonomic solutions to reduce musculoskeletal strain
  • Regular vehicle inspections and maintenance

Heavy vehicles are a familiar part of our industry, and safety should always be a priority.
