Safety outcomes across Australian workplaces are improving—but for ACT builders, staying proactive is critical.

Posted

New national data shows a decline in work related fatalities, including in construction, reinforcing that strong site leadership and effective worker consultation make a real difference. For members, this is a timely reminder that progress depends on daily action—not complacency.

For ACT builders and contractors operating in a high-risk environment with increasing regulatory expectations, this progress reinforces an important message: safety outcomes improve when:

  • leadership is visible on site,
  • hazards are actively managed, and
  • workers are empowered to speak up.

This article is a timely reminder that while the trend is encouraging, every incident is preventable—and complacency has no place on ACT building sites.

Call to action:
Master Builders ACT members are encouraged to use this data as a prompt to:

  • Review site-specific WHS systems and high-risk controls
  • Invest in supervisor and Health and Safety Representative (HSR) training
  • Strengthen consultation and reporting practices on site
  • Lead safety conversations every day—before incidents occur

By keeping safety front and centre, ACT builders can protect their workforce, meet their obligations, and ensure everyone goes home safely.

Master Builders ACT offers a range of WorkSafe ACT approved safety training, including HSR, supervisor and high-risk work courses to support members in meeting their obligations and keeping workers safe.
