Safety Alert

Posted

In response to the worksite fatality that occurred earlier this week, WorkSafe ACT have issued a Working at Heights Safety Alert. We encourage all our members to review their working at heights systems, and their WHS obligations. All businesses, from small residential builders and trade subcontractors through to large commercial contractors, have responsibilities to ensure the health and safety of their workers, contractors and visitors on site (including psychological health and well-being).

MBA ACT offers several training courses for Working at Heights, Manual Handling, Workplace Impairment, Mental Health Awareness and more. For further information, click here, or contact our Short Course Team on 02 6175 5900. MBA ACT can tailor training to your business (minimum numbers required).

We are also holding our first WHS Member Workshop of 2020 on Wednesday, 19 February. This workshop will provide an overview of the WHS legislation, regulations and ACT codes of practice to assist PCBU’s in meeting their obligations.

Now is a good time to check in on workers. If you are feeling the effects of the recent events, there is a good chance your workers are too. Consider how you might support your workers. You may like to consider:

  • Suggesting annual leave to encourage rest and rejuvenation
  • Organising counselling or other support services
  • Debriefing with entire teams through a team event or gathering
  • Increasing the number of site inspections and worker engagements
  • Providing further education and training
  • Organising a company activity or event for downtime and morale building (such as a footy, tennis or cricket match, company BBQ, cooking competition, staff lunch or a day on the green)
  • Having one-on-one conversations with workers
  • Organising a Tradie’s Tune-Up with OzHelp
  • Reviewing company safety goals and strategies and communicate with workers to keep safety a primary focus in the workplace

If you require WHS advice or support, please call us on (02) 6175 5900. If you require mental health support for yourself or your workers, please reach out to OzHelp, Beyond Blue, Mens Link, Life Line or ACT Health.
