Reminder: High-Low lifts are not permitted in the ACT

Posted

WorkSafe ACT recently witnessed the use of a high-low lift on a construction site and consequently issued a reminder that such lifts are not permitted in the ACT.

The WorkSafe reminder was accompanied by a warning that regulatory action would be taken if they found one load higher than the other. WorkSafe ACT inspectors will conduct inspections to ensure that worksites conducting crane lifts are meeting all their WHS duties.

What is a high-low lift?

Also known as Christmas tree lifts or multiple vertical lifts, a high-low lift involves multiple loads being slung by a crane in a vertical configuration.

What are the risks of a high-low lift?

While it is generally recognised that using high-low lifts reduces the number of lifts undertaken during construction work, it poses a risk of serious injury to the dogman working under the suspended load. This is especially true when attaching or landing the next load.

WorkSafe ACT is of the opinion that it is always reasonably practicable not to use high-low lifts. Hence, the practice is prohibited in the ACT. You can find guidance on high-low lifts here.
