Ready to work at heights? Start with EWP Training

Posted

Construction work in the ACT involves tasks that require a safe, stable platform at height. Scissor lifts and small boom lifts are used every day across Canberra, but they need proper training to operate confidently.

That’s why many workers come to MBA Training to complete RIIHAN301E – Operate elevating work platform.

The training teaches you how to plan, check and operate elevating work platforms safely. The course covers scissor lifts and boom-type EWPs under 11 metres and is delivered face-to-face at MBA Training in Fyshwick.

It is practical, hands-on, and focused on real conditions you are likely to encounter on ACT worksites.

During the course, you learn:

  • how to complete pre-start inspections
  • assess site conditions and
  • position the platform correctly.

You also spend time understanding safe load limits, ground stability and how to hand the platform while working at heights. This is especially important in environments where access can be tight or uneven, such as driveways, courtyards or older commercial buildings around Canberra.

You’ll also learn how to manage risks. For example, if you are trimming a facade, installing external lighting, or repairing a roofline, you may have obstacles above or below that affect the lift’s movement. The training helps you recognise these hazards early so you can adjust your set-up and work method before raising the platform.

This approach reduces incidents and supports safe, smooth work on site.

The course also explores emergency procedures and communication. You learn what to do if the lift becomes unresponsive, how to lower the platform safely using ground controls and how to ensure you and your team stay in contact throughout the job. These skills help you feel more confident and give employers peace of mind knowing that you understand how to work safely.

When you finish, you’ll receive a nationally recognised qualification that shows employers that you are trained to operate elevating work platforms correctly.

Having this skill can also make you more flexible on-site, since many teams prefer workers who can operate their own access equipment when needed.
