Importance of Site Cleanliness and Notice of Building Work

Posted

As part of our ongoing responsibility to support members in maintaining compliance and professional standards, Master Builders ACT would like to remind all builders of the critical importance of site presentation, particularly regarding site cleanliness and the proper display of Notice of Building Work signs.

During a briefing last week, building regulators made it clear that messy worksites and missing or incorrect signage are red flags that draw immediate attention from inspectors. These issues are often seen as early indicators of broader non-compliance on site, which can lead to further scrutiny, notices, or penalties.

Why Site Cleanliness Matters

  • Regulatory compliance: A poorly maintained site can suggest to regulators that safety and quality standards are not being prioritised.
  • Work health and safety (WHS): Untidy sites increase the risk of accidents, slips, trips, and falls. A clean site demonstrates your commitment to safe work practices.
  • Professional reputation: Clients, neighbours, and the broader community take a lasting impression from site presentation. A well-kept site reflects positively on your business and our industry as a whole.

Notice of Building Work – A Simple but Essential Requirement

Under ACT building legislation, a Notice of Building Work sign must be:

  • Displayed clearly at the site entrance throughout the project.
  • Accurate and up to date, including builder details, project information, and relevant approvals.
  • Maintained in good condition, not faded, hidden, or damaged.

Failure to display a correct Notice of Building Work is not a minor oversight – it is a breach that can result in enforcement action.

Key Takeaways for Builders

  1. Keep your sites clean and orderly – daily housekeeping goes a long way.
  1. Check your Notice of Building Work signage at the start and throughout the project.
  1. Use compliance as a selling point – tidy, professional sites reassure clients, regulators, and the community.

Final Word

Regulators have made their expectations clear that site cleanliness and proper signage are non-negotiable. Treat them as visible markers of your professionalism and compliance. By keeping your sites orderly and your Notices correct, you reduce the risk of unnecessary regulator intervention and help lift industry standards.
