Final Pre-Shutdown Checklist – Safety, Environmental & Fire Controls

Posted

Before leaving the site for the Christmas break, complete this short, critical checklist to ensure your sites are safe, secure and compliant with WorkSafe, EPA and other audit teams’ expectations.

Essential Site Checks

  • Scaffold & Safety: Scaffold tied/tagged; barriers and void protection secure; remove ladders and loose platforms.
  • Weatherproofing: Roof and flashings secure; all openings sealed; gutters/valleys cleared; protect exposed flooring and linings.
  • Services: Power, gas and water isolated where possible; remove temp leads; tag any live services.
  • Security: Lock windows/doors; remove or secure tools, plant and fuels; ensure fencing is intact and locked.

Environmental & EPA Requirements

  • Silt control: Silt fencing repaired, upright and trenched; sediment socks on drains; stockpiles covered/stabilised.
  • Waste: Remove combustible rubbish; secure skip bins; store or remove chemicals and fuels, and particularly anything that may blow away.
  • Roads & Kerbs: Sweep roads, kerbs and footpaths; remove sediment tracking and debris from public areas.

Fire Danger Precautions

  • Clear all combustible piles (timber, cardboard, plastics).
  • Remove or properly store flammables (solvents, adhesives, fuels).
  • Ensure no hot-work residue or ignition sources remain, including long grasses or weeds.
  • Maintain clear ground around the site boundary and structures.
