The $5.6million refurbishment of the Medical Imaging department at Canberra Hospital was a huge undertaking, exceptionally managed and delivered by Shaw Building Group.
The first phase saw the transformation of an outdoor courtyard into a lead-lined scanning suite, control room, cannula bay, and holding bay. The second phase involved revamping the existing MRI department, replacing the scanner, adding new magnetic and RF shielding, and creating new control rooms, reception area, plant room, and change rooms. They skilfully handled the technical challenges by using a large structural steel landing platform to remove the existing MRI machine and employing a crane lift to deliver the new machine.
Quality was a top priority, with strict installation and hygiene standards employed throughout the project. Copper faraday cabin and silicone steel magnetic field shielding were used to protect against radio frequencies and magnetic artifacts.
Across both stages of work, Shaw Building Group showed outstanding skill and technical prowess to completely overhaul the department, all with minimal disruption to hospital operations.
