The Strategy sets a national vision of safe and healthy work for all and provides a platform for improving Australian WHS outcomes over the next decade. It outlines targets to measure progress over the next 10 years, including a reduction in worker fatalities caused by traumatic injuries by 30%.

MBA ACT has identified the following key points from the report regarding the construction industry:

Key Findings:

  • High Fatality Rate: The construction industry has one of the highest fatality rates, with 39% of fatalities due to falls from heights.
  • Serious Claims: The industry has a high frequency rate of serious workers’ compensation claims, particularly for traumatic joint/ligament and muscle/tendon injuries.
  • Permanent Impairment: Construction workers are at significant risk of permanent impairment, with a high frequency rate of claims.
  • Mental Health: There is a notable increase in serious claims for mental health conditions within the industry.

Focus Areas for Improvement:

  • Fall Prevention: Enhanced measures to prevent falls from heights are critical.
  • Injury Management: Better management of physical injuries, particularly those involving joints and tendons.
  • Mental Health Support: Increased support for mental health issues among construction workers.
  • Safety Training: Ongoing safety training and awareness programs to reduce the incidence of injuries and fatalities.
