Members will be aware that Master Builders ACT has long advocated for licensing of all trade contractors in the ACT. Expanding licensing will help ensure all participants in the building and construction supply chain work towards a shared goal of delivering high-quality work, accepting accountability for their role, and strengthening confidence in the industry.
The ACT Government has now released a draft consultation paper outlining a proposal to extend occupational licensing to additional trades. The reform is currently in the planning and policy phase, and the Government is seeking feedback from industry participants until 21 April 2026.

Current Licensing requirements
Under the current legislation, licenses are required for the following occupations:
These roles are licensed under the Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004 (ACT) (COLA).
Under the COLA, the Building Regulator may inspect licensed work for compliance. If defects are identified, rectification orders can be issued up to 10 years after the work has been completed.
Trades that are not licensed are not subject to these inspections and cannot be ordered to rectify defective works.
