  • The Mill Architecture + Design,

  • Drewaire Constructions

Old Canberra Reimagined

‘Old Canberra Reimagined’ is a heritage renovation project aimed at preserving and enhancing the original features of 3 Wilmot Crescent in Forrest, designed in 1936 by Malcolm Moir and Heather Sutherland. An early example of inter-war functionalist style, the home required careful restoration. In the judges words, this project was ‘a great example of a good working relationship between builder and architect’ with The Mill commissioned for architecture and interior design and Drewaire providing expert knowledge of the building. By blending restoration with innovation, Old Canberra Reimagined ensures the historic home continues to stand as a testament to Canberra’s architectural legacy.

Renovation/Extension $1 million to $2 million

  • Creative Contractors

This project by Creative Contractors is another excellent example of a renovation that seeks to upgrade an older home, while maintain its charm and blending with the surrounding suburbs. The new design aimed to be timeless, incorporating solar elements and extending the home across the block. Design and aesthetic value were high priorities, with judges commenting on the high level of finish and workmanship. Notable features include the stunning front doors and entryway, barn doors and lounge room fireplace, all hand-made on site, and incorporation of the solar aspect in the design.

Renovation/Extension more than $2 million

  • Brother Projects

This spectacular renovation and extension of an original Canberra home in Griffith honours the home’s heritage, while delivering a large, modern extension. Brother Projects, last year’s House of the Year winners, have artfully restored this inner-south gem, retaining the cottage feel without feeling outdated, and cleverly alluding to modern style through the semi-circle render feature on the guest bedroom. The home provides ample spaces for family, work, and guest privacy. A blend of indoor and outdoor living was achieved through large Vitrocsa sliding doors and cantilevered concrete slabs that overhang the backyard. This project is a shining example of integrating modern living and design with heritage originality.
