The Australian War Memorial Main Entrance project, led by Kane Constructions, combines heritage preservation with modern engineering, enhancing the enduring significance of this cultural icon. The new entrance, situated beneath the forecourt, improves visitor access, security screening, and wayfinding. It connects to the precinct and underground car park, with a landscaped courtyard and a custom-glazed lift. A standout visual feature is the stunning ‘oculus’, which was a considerable feat of engineering and planning. The new entrance also features a 250-person theatre, function room, public amenities, orientation gallery, and bookshop. The Excellence Awards Judges noted that the depth and breadth of knowledge, creativity, inclusion and execution was evident in this project, making it a worthy winner of Project of the Year.
