Media Release – MBA Welcomes Liberals Pledge To Back Local Businesses

Posted

Master Builders ACT has welcomed the Canberra Liberals pledge to back the nearly 20,000 Canberrans employed in the construction industry.

Included in the Canberra Liberals plan to support local businesses is a promise to improve the tendering process for ACT Government projects, streamline the Secure Local Jobs Code and deliver a 10 year infrastructure plan.

Master Builders ACT CEO Michael Hopkins said, “The Canberra Liberals commitment to ensure the Secure Local Jobs Code is consistent with Commonwealth guidelines is a key step in the right direction to support ACT construction businesses.”

“The MBA has been calling for the ACT Government to review the Secure Local Jobs Code and amend several clauses which advance the Unions industrial relations agenda,” he said.

Mr Hopkins said, “In addition to the announcement to improve the Secure Local Jobs Code, the Canberra Liberals have stated that they will reduce the time and effort required for businesses to tender for ACT Government contracts.”

“This includes ensuring that there are clear timeframes around each stage of the tender process, which is another key policy area that the MBA has been calling for,” he said.

Mr Hopkins said, “More than ever, Canberra’s building and construction industry needs a Government that is committed to ensuring local projects are awarded to local contractors and improving the tender process for ACT Government contracts will be warmly welcomed by industry.”

“These policies, in conjunction with the Liberals commitment to deliver a 10 year infrastructure plan, will boost industry confidence and provide our members with a clear pipeline of work,” he said.
