CEO Update: The ACT Election, MBA Advocacy and The Excellence Awards

Posted

Congratulations to Andrew Barr and the ALP team for their victory in the ACT election. Congratulations also go to Shane Rattenbury for the ACT Greens election result. We also congratulate Elizabeth Lee who became the new leader of the Canberra Liberals and thank Alistair Coe for his strong engagement with the MBA over the past four years. We look forward to hearing soon about the final make-up of the next Legislative Assembly, and hope to work cooperatively with the newly formed ACT Government to build a secure future for the building and construction industry.

This week we are backing MBA Australia’s calls for the HomeBuilder grant to be extended by the Federal Government. With the latest forecasts predicting a 40% downturn in the commercial building sector, it is crucial that the scheme is expanded to support the construction of higher density apartment dwellings. Given the solemn financial forecasts, we are looking for the Federal and ACT Governments to provide stronger stimulus measures that can help compensate for the expected drop in construction industry investment. We will also continue to call for the ACT Government to provide greater support for local construction businesses.

Well done to all of the Excellence Awards winners who have already been announced. The high caliber of craftsmanship across all categories has produced outstanding projects and homes. Remember to follow the Master Builders ACT Facebook and Instagram pages to see more winners announcements.

Finally, I would like to remind MBA members to not become complacent about COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. The ACT Government have released a poster series titled ‘Don’t let complacency set us back’, as a reminder about maintaining social distancing requirements and correct hygiene practices. Our site posters are also available on the COVID-19 hub on our website, which includes posters in Simplified Chinese.
